(l to r) Global-5 licensed pilots Tyler McConnell and Jon Roher with pilot-in-training Dom Scalise

Global-5’s video and photography game has reached new heights! We’re pleased to announce that we’ve added a top-of-the-line drone and another licensed drone pilot to our portfolio of transportation client services.

Licensure (and associated training) is essential to piloting a drone over roadway construction sites or near connected vehicle test beds. And at Global-5, our pilots have the added benefit of open lines of communication with engineering and construction teams for ease of coordinating flight logistics.

According to pilot Tyler McConnell, having on-staff licensed drone pilots ensures Global-5 is in full compliance with regulations and safety standards governing commercial drone operations.

“Licensed pilots minimize the risk of incidents or legal issues and provide clients peace of mind knowing that their assets are produced responsibly and professionally,” he said.

Tyler, who also serves as a Global-5 public information and community outreach consultant, works on the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) I-4 Beyond the Ultimate projects and helped record this video showing progress at the Interstate 4 (I-4) interchanges at Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) and Daryl Carter Parkway.

Drone capabilities provide a variety of unique services and products tailored specifically to infrastructure agency clients.

“Drone-captured video and photography are indispensable to today’s transportation-related public information initiatives,” C.J. Stankiewicz, vice president and the director of creative services at Global-5, said. “Stunning aerial footage adds dynamic and exciting elements to all sorts of communications and education materials and makes them more engaging for the audience.”

Drones offer a more cost-effective way to capture aerial footage compared to traditional methods, such as helicopter or crane shots. This affordability translates into high-quality content within tighter budgets, which makes drone-assisted features accessible to a wider range of clients.

Additional examples of the innovative possibilities offered by drones include:

  • Drones support creative concepts that were previously difficult (in addition to costly) to execute. Different angles, perspectives, and movements that create captivating visuals and tell compelling stories can all be on the production storyboard.
  • Drone-captured aerial footage is ideal for showcasing the efficiency of transportation routes with vehicles in motion, or the scale of infrastructure projects.
  • Combining drone footage with virtual or augmented reality creates powerful, immersive virtual tours and interactive experiences that, for example, allows users to explore travel routes in a virtual environment.
  • Drones can be used to capture live aerial footage of events, such as the opening of a newly completed diverging diamond interchange or express lanes. That footage can be streamed online in real-time or recorded for later use.
