More than 300 students participated in the PIO Learning Lab during the 2026 Florida Construction Career Days, a two-day career showcase held annually at the Volusia County Fairgrounds.<\/p><\/div>\n
Over the course of two days, more than 300 students participated in the interactive session, which highlighted the essential role that public information officers play in construction projects. The learning lab introduced students to how transportation professionals communicate construction activities and impacts to the public, including road and lane closures, detours, and major construction operations.<\/p>\n
Students explored the wide range of tools used in the field, from social media and targeted email alerts to door-to-door outreach and media relations, that demonstrate how communication is critical to safety, mobility, and public awareness.<\/p>\n

They also collaborated to refine peer-developed talking points, learning how professionals distill complex information into clear, effective messaging.<\/p>\n
The session also emphasized the growing importance of digital communication. A display board featuring FDOT\u2019s social media platforms illustrated how agencies connect with the public in real time and engage younger audiences through modern channels.<\/p>\n
