ORLANDO, Fla., NOV. 12, 2010 \u2014 Norman Mineta, the former secretary of the US Department of Transportation, said the United States needs high speed rail to remain competitive in the world economy. Mineta made his remarks during an exclusive interview with High Speed Rail News Channel anchor and Global-5 CEO Mary Hamill.<\/p>\n
Mineta said the United States\u2019 current transportation advantage is in aviation, while Europe and Asia excel in developing high speed rail to more efficiently move goods and people, and reduce traffic. \u201cChina is now committed to building 16,000 miles of High Speed Rail. What we have talked about is a regional system of High Speed Rail, it doesn’t even come to 4,000 miles,\u201d he said. \u201cIt’s a far cry from what others are doing. So from the perspective of creating jobs, developing cutting edge technology, relieving congestion, improving our quality of life and the environment, high speed rail really is an area that we should be pursuing.\u201d<\/p>\n
