Former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta Tells Global-5’s High Speed Rail News Channel That America Needs High Speed Rail
ORLANDO, Fla., NOV. 12, 2010 — Norman Mineta, the former secretary of the US Department of Transportation, said the United States needs high speed rail to remain competitive in the world economy. Mineta made his remarks during an exclusive interview with High Speed Rail News Channel anchor and Global-5 CEO Mary Hamill.
Mineta said the United States’ current transportation advantage is in aviation, while Europe and Asia excel in developing high speed rail to more efficiently move goods and people, and reduce traffic. “China is now committed to building 16,000 miles of High Speed Rail. What we have talked about is a regional system of High Speed Rail, it doesn't even come to 4,000 miles,” he said. “It's a far cry from what others are doing. So from the perspective of creating jobs, developing cutting edge technology, relieving congestion, improving our quality of life and the environment, high speed rail really is an area that we should be pursuing.”
Global-5 launched the High Speed Rail News Channel in April, 2010. Hamill said she started the channel because she believes this new American industry needs to be documented. “Since we are located at the epicenter of American high speed rail, we are in the right place at the right time with the right resources to do the job.”
